MSDS Studio: Design by Jessica Nakanishi and Jonathan Sabine from Canada

The Canadian design studio MSDS Studio was founded in 2013 by Jessica Nakanishi and Jonathan Sabine and specialises in interior design, furniture design and lighting design. MSDS Studio works internationally with a wide variety of clients. These include, amongst others, furniture and lighting manufacturers such as Muuto, Normann Copenhagen, Fritz Hansen and Woud, as well as companies such as Shopify and institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto and the Phi Centre cultural centre in Montréal.

In its design work, MSDS Studio engages with contemporary culture whilst drawing on traditional craft techniques and modern design principles. The focus is always on materiality, form and space in relation to the requirements of each project. The studio adopts an interdisciplinary approach in which ingenuity, a resource-efficient use of materials and practical feasibility play a key role. The designs are developed in close collaboration with manufacturers and production companies – including prototyping and small-batch production.

The Halves coffee table for Muuto demonstrates how materiality, form and function intertwine for MSDS Studio. Crafted from terrazzo, the table combines a geometric, asymmetrical silhouette with a striking, stone-like and robust surface. Its offset second tier not only adds a dynamic formal accent but also provides practical storage space.
